July 2009

We finally got the track back at the beginning of June but the stadium resembled a building site as the contractor
has not tidied up and the finish left a lot to be desired. However both the council and SML worked hard to get the
stadium up to scratch for the Combined Events International which was held this weekend 25th/26th July.
Dick Parles is in discussions with the council as some of the facilities still need to be finished and some of the
equipment needs to be replaced and repaired.
The stadium hosted the South of England senior championships but there were a lot of teething problems because of
the state of the stadium. However the BMC Grand Prix which only needed the track went of well with Dame Kelly
Holmes being there for the whole meeting. The minors mid summer meeting was held the next day with 140
competitors and was enjoyed by all.
The open meetings started again on June 3rd and the numbers are up on last year despite not advertising the events
and will run to the end of September.
May I repeat my plea from the last newsletter in that we still desperately need more help in all areas of the club from
administration, refreshments through to officiating and coaching. We have worked hard to obtain the current
facilities and it is now down to everyone to ensure that this continues.
Charitable Status
The club has now received Community Amateur Sports Club status so that it can receive donations free of tax.
There a certain conditions attached which means that we have to promote the sport in the community. We are still
awaiting the legacy of John Harding which will underpin our future development work in this area.
Woodside
As you are all aware there a parking restrictions at Woodside which is causing some difficulties. A group has been
set up of all the clubs on the complex to monitor and progress this issue.
Clubhouse
We have purchased some new benches and tables for the patio area of the clubhouse but we need your suggestions
on how the clubhouse could be improved or better used.
Club Championships
The club championships will be held this year on Sunday the 6th September and we hope as many of you who can
will come along and enjoy the day. We will finish off with a barbecue in the time-honoured fashion.
Subscriptions
There are still several of you who have not renewed your subscriptions. May I remind you that if you are still
actively training or competing you are not insured under the UK:Athletics policy if your subscriptions have not been
renewed.

Danielle Sanderson won silver in the World Masters' Champs Half Marathon (W45 category) 17/03/08 in Clermont- Ferrand France, and team gold for Great britain.
Danielle's Quote "I was very pleased with my time of 81 min 47s, but was only 5s behind the winner, and in truth should have been able to beat her"!

Jan 2008

John Harding passed away. John was a benefactor of the club and was the club treasurer in the 50's.

Dec 2007             Keith Dearing 1936 - 2007

Watford Harriers are sad to announce the death of Keith Dearing following a heart attack on Tuesday evening 4th December.
Keith had been a prominent member of the club for 55 years as an athlete and official holding the positions of Treasurer, Chairman and then President, and currently serving a second term as Treasurer among his other roles. Keith's second love was Modern Sequence Dancing, and he was the Chairman of the Warners End Sequence Dance Club in Hemel Hempstead who will feel his loss as much as we do.
It was his tenacity and hard work from the 1980s through to his untimely death that ensured the club and Woodside Stadium is held in high regard throughout the athletic world both nationally and internationally.
Keith was an international grade starter/marksman and had often been seen on television officiating in the Grand Prixs and internationals. He had also served on the SEAAA Track and Field commitee as a budget manager.
Keith will probably be best known as the organiser of the highly successful Watford Open Meeting. He was also a prime mover in the building of the Woodside Clubhouse. He will be sorely missed.
No more will we hear the boom of his guns and see the fireworks display when he started races at Woodside.
Our condolences go to his wife, family and friends.
Donations will go to the Diabetes Society, British Heart Foundation and a trust supported by Keith and his wife for Terminally Ill Children.
These donations can be sent to Watford Harriers c/o 7 Rainbow Court, Oxhey Rd Watford WD19 4RP cheques payable to Watford Harriers and the club will forward them on to the family with the other donations that have been collected.
